"Calling a band “underrated” means they’re a diamond in the rough, one whose greatness needs only wider hearing. And with Brooklyn’s American Darlings, merely hearing has always been fervent believing—right from their start, right from first plays. Simply put, they are the finest kind of modern whiz-bang, spanning hot, melodic power-pop, shoegaze, indie rock, and postpunk. My first review’s comparative attempt, eons ago, was to summon Superdrag, Smithereens,Buffalo Tom, Material Issue, Sugar, and MBV; but that was a lot of straws-grasping. The main takeaway was/is that guitarist/frontman Jason Maksymilian is a hell of a first rate riff/tune writer, right from his/their awesome debut “Kimchee Princess” (what gargantuan hooks from day one!), and their lineups fully match his indomitable, bursting spirit for boisterous, blaring, infectious enthusiasm. AD records just charge out of your speakers with pure excitement of playing such great songs with flair, style, and nuance; ergo, an illuminating “best of” is entirely in order, so greater numbers can experience their bounty. As Sloan once succinctly suggested: “It’s for people who know what rock ’n’ roll is about!” And how!"
